On the 3rd and 4th of August 2023, the Amazon Cities Forum, an articulation of local
governments located in the Amazon Basin, will meet in Belém. Held a few days before the
Presidential Summit of the Amazonian Countries, this initiative represents an extraordinary
opportunity for the Amazonian municipalities of the eight countries in the region to constitute
a permanent space for the construction and implementation of joint initiatives.
Besides fostering cooperation, the Forum aims to strengthen the role of Amazonian municipalities as a means to promote sustainable urbanization in the Amazon based upon shared values and a common agenda, composed of integrated strategic plans, in order to form a permanent alliance in favor of integrated and sustainable urban development.
“Which kind of cities do we aim to build in order to achieve a more sustainable, resilient, inclusive Amazon, securing the balance between nature and humanity?”
In this sense, the Amazon Cities Forum aims to articulate a strong network of Amazonian cities capable of exerting leverage over the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will take place in Belém in 2025. Furthermore, the Forum also proposes to be an effective step towards the establishment of a municipal cooperation instance within the scope of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).
